Holmium

Description

Holmium Ho 99.5% 99.9% is a silvery white soft and malleable rare earth metal, hexagonal crystal structure with melting point 1474°C and density 8.79g/cm³, which is soluble in inorganic acid, stable in dry air, but easy to be oxidized at high temperature and under humid atmosphere, and release combustible gases when contacting with water. Holmium is chemically active metal which can be synthesized with almost all nonmetallic elements. Holmium Metal should be stored in cool, dry and ventilated warehouse, and away from oxidants, acids, halogens, wet water, fire and heat source, and not be allowed to be mixed storage. Holmium is widely used  in magneto-optical material, yttrium iron and yttrium aluminum garnet additive, magnetic refrigeration alloy Terfenol-D, optical communication devices such as fiber laser, fiber amplifier, fiber sensor and so on, and as an additive for the manufacture of metal halogen lamps to greatly improve the radiation efficiency. Holmium oxide is known as the most paramagnetic substance, and holmium compounds can be used as additives for new ferromagnetic materials. Holmium laser crystal is also produced for non-invasive or minimally invasive surgery in medicine.
