Description
Samarium Sm 99.9%, 99.99%, a silvery white rare earth metal, with triclinic crystal structure, melting point 1072°C and density 7.54 g/cm3, triclinic crystal structure, which is quite stable in dry air but easy to be oxidized in wet air and combine with nonmetallic elements, soluble in acid but insoluble in water. Samarium can be separated from other rare earth elements by ion exchange method, or be prepared by reducing samarium oxide with barium or lanthanum. Samarium should be kept in cool and dry warehouse, and away from oxidants, acids and moisture etc. Samarium is of great use as neutron-absorbing material in the atomic energy industry, permanent magnetic material, photoelectric equipment, alloy manufacturing, microwave and infrared equipment, laser materials, and also finds application in solid state component and superconducting technology field as to be magnetized easily but difficult to be demagnetized, and for electronic and ceramic industries.
