Description
Ytterbium Yb 99.9%, 99.99%, a silvery white soft and malleable metal, with melting point 824°C and density 6.54 g/cm3, which is quite stable in the air, soluble in acid and liquid ammonia but insoluble in cold water. With two crystal structures of α- type face centered cubic system and β- type body centered cubic lattice, Ytterbium is usually separated and purified from monazite by solvent extraction and ion exchange, or ytterbium oxide is reduced by metal lanthanum and then obtained by vacuum distillation process. Ytterbium should be kept in cool and dry warehouse and away from oxidants, acids and moisture etc. Ytterbium is used in the manufacture of special alloys and stainless steel to increase the density, strength and other mechanical properties, optical fiber sensors, free space laser communication and ultrashort pulse amplification, and as a high-quality laser material for the preparation of the laser crystals, laser glass and fiber lasers such as YAG, GGG, FAP, S-FAP, YV04 etc are more and more widely used in modern industry, agriculture, medicine, scientific research and military industry. Ytterbium is also used as phosphor activator, radio ceramics, portable X-ray source, medical diagnosis, computer memory devices additive etc.
